David Carson

David Carson is the "grunge typographer" whose magazine Ray Gun helped explode the possibilities of text on a page

David Carson's boundary-breaking typography in the 1990s, in Ray Gun magazine and other pop-cult books, ushered in a new vision of type and page design -- quite simply, breaking the traditional mold of type on a page and demanding fresh eyes from the reader. Squishing, smashing, slanting and enchanting the words on a layout, Carson made the point, over and over, that letters on a page are art. You can see the repercussions of his work to this day, on a million Flash intro pages (and probably just as many skateboards and T-shirts).
His first book, with Lewis Blackwell and a foreword by David Byrne, is The End of Print, and he's written or collaborated on several others, including the magisterial Book of Probes, an exploration of the thinking of Marshall McLuhan. His latest book is Trek, a collection of his recent work.

Quotes by David Carson

  • “You have to utilize who you are in your work. Nobody else can do that: nobody else can pull from your background, from your parents, your upbringing, your whole life experience.”

Jamie Raid

Jamie Raid was born in 1947 in England and he is a British artist and anarchist .

His work, is made from letters which are cut out from newspaper  and makes an headlines in the rock/punk style. He was educated at John Ruskin Grammar School in Croydon and he also took part in a sit in at Croydon Art School.

Reid produced a series of screen prints in 1997, the twentieth anniversary of the birth of punk/rock music. Reid has also produced artwork for the world music fusion band Afro Celt Sound System.

Reid says: "There's always been a political side to my work from the late 60's to my recent involvement on the anti-war movement. But we are also immersed in beauty and magic- beauty is the greatest weapon we've got to change things".

It seems that the politics has been the greatets force behind Reid's work.
Using the vibrancy of green as the background colour and the rest black and white,it really brings forward the subject of the print as the green is giving power behind the text meaning the subject instantly jumps out at you in a threatening manner

David Dawnton

Was born in Kent, England, 1959; In 1984 he moved to Brighton and began his illustration career;

He worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from advertising and packaging to illustrating fiction, cook books and, occasionally, fashion.

David has attended Paris Haute Couture shows for more than a decade. His illustrations chart both the back stage and front of house of the couture world. His portfolio includes portraits of models Erin O'Connor, Lily Cole, Linda Evangelista and Carmen Dell'Orfice.

What techniques he uses?
From what I read about him and from what I seen in his work , it depends of his mood and what he is trying to convey. He love using ink, I also uses gouache, watercolour, oil stick, occasionally acrylics…

Andy Warhol

He became a famous artist of 20th century by paintings of soup cans and Marilyn Monroe.

Until death in 1980's , Andy worked in lots of different areas as painting, photography, film, TV programs, magazine, adverts, produced bands and designed record covers .

Started off as a commercial artist in 1950 producing illustrations for adverts and magazines

Style was very popular and made a lot of money which he used to launch his career as a fine artist.
As we see, Andy drew most in watercolors, combining a darker color and brighter color to make one of them stand out, but by making them stand out more he was adding a black outline made out of ink. If we look careful it makes it look more like a cartoon.

Agnes Decourchelle

Agnes is one of the artists that works a lot in pencils.Pencils remind me of little kids, drawing different line which don't make sense.

However, since I started to research about Agnes, and her work, how she transforms every little piece into very good quality illustrations only with the help of pencils and I really like her work. Her interesting detailed type of work made me love it and actually do my final piece using her drawing style.

About the work:

Looking at the illustrations of her work with clothes, we can see how Agnes Decourchelle creates her work. With thin and thick lines, she gives every coat that she makes, a good line, shape, and form.

Some illustration presents a very interesting combination of different shades of blue. Different tones of blue from dark to light. Her talent demonstrates that with focus and those simple, colourful tools make of wood, you can make the simplest images look interesting.

Vincet van Gogh

The dozens of self-portraits by Vincent van Gogh were an important part of his oeuvre as a painter. Vincent van Gogh created many self-portraits during his lifetime. Most probably, Van Gogh's self portraits are depicting the face as it appeared in the mirror he used to reproduce his face, i.e. his right side in the image is in reality the left side of his face.

Between November of 1881 and July of 1890, Vincent van Gogh painted almost 900 paintings. Since his death, he has become one of the most famous painters in the world. Van Gogh’s paintings have captured the minds and hearts of millions of art lovers and have made art lovers of those new to world of art. The following excerpts are from letters that Van Gogh wrote expressing how he evolved as a painter.

In 1886 he went to Paris to join his brother Théo, the manager of Goupil's gallery. In Paris, van Gogh studied with Cormon, inevitably met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin, and began to lighten his very dark palette and to paint in the short brushstrokes of the Impressionists. His nervous temperament made him a difficult companion and night-long discussions combined with painting all day undermined his health. He decided to go south to Arles where he hoped his friends would join him and help found a school of art.

I really like his work and I made a copy of his autoportrait.  I tried to paint in his unique stile of painting and to copy the picture as accurate as I could. he worked with lots of colours and combine them in a very nice stile making the painting look so complicated and fascinating.
